On Monday, June 4, 2012, a jury in Wilmington, N.C. awarded the Inlet Point homeowners association $2,547,948.00 to repair the neighborhood's bulkhead. The bulkhead is a 3,000 feet long, 12 feet high wall that branches off the intercostal waterway north of Carolina Beach into a marina-type basin in the neighborhood.
The verdict came after a hard fought, three week trial during which the contractor, Intercoastal Diving, Inc. (IDI), attempted to place blame entirely on the project engineer, Gary Greene, and his design. After deliberating for less than two hours, the jury found that Mr. Greene was not at fault and IDI's construction of the bulkhead was the cause of the catastrophic and pervasive failures. The $2,547,948.00 jury award is precisely the amount requested by the Inlet Point homeowners association, down to the penny, and represents WBM attorneys' second multi-million dollar verdict in North Carolina in as many years.
WBM trial team consisted of Daniel K. Bryson, Matthew E. Lee, Karl Amelchenko, and Amanda Mkamanga.
